Case study
Australian energy utility
Moving toward a digital enterprise is not a technology project. It is a change to how an organisation knows itself—how it stores, shares and acts on information.

1. Overview
Turning strategy into something real
An Australian energy utility had a clear strategic direction: transition towards a more digital enterprise, with improved knowledge management, information sharing, collaboration and data capability across the business.
What it needed was a program that could turn that direction into practical change—delivered on time, within budget and in a way that people across the organisation would adopt.
9Yards was engaged to help design and deliver the transformation.
02. The client
Australian energy utility
An established Australian energy utility providing electricity, gas and related services to residential and business customers.
The organisation operates critical infrastructure and delivers essential services in a highly regulated and rapidly changing environment. Reliable service depends on information systems, governance and ways of working that can keep pace with operational, customer and regulatory needs.
03. The challenge
Uplift that sticks
Information management programs have a well-known failure mode: they deliver a platform and declare success, while the organisation continues working as it always has.
Adoption requires more than new tools. It requires clear governance, practical training and a structure that supports people to change how they work—not simply which software they use.
For an organisation operating critical infrastructure, information discipline is not optional. Poor knowledge management can lead to decisions based on incomplete information, compliance gaps, duplicated effort and operational risk.
04. Our Approach
Two workstreams, one outcome
The information management transformation program was structured around two parallel workstreams that reinforced each other: the technology platform transition, and the governance and cultural change required to make the platform useful.
On the technology side, we supported the introduction of a new content management and collaboration platform, including a redesigned intranet focused on usability, improved team sites and tailored training for end users.
In parallel, we worked across the organisation to establish the governance foundations for effective information management. This included frameworks for how information was created, stored and managed; clear roles and accountability; change planning and user-adoption roadmaps; and business cases for each stage of the program.
We also led the request-for-proposal process for the collaboration initiative and developed the conceptual design architecture for the first phase, ensuring the technical, governance and change components remained aligned from the outset.
05. Outcome
A measurable uplift, built to last
The program delivered its core objective: a significant and measurable uplift in the organisation’s information management capability, completed on time and within budget.
The new platform provided a more usable and better-governed way to create, manage and share information across the organisation.
Just as importantly, the governance, accountability and adoption structures were put in place to sustain the improvement beyond implementation. The organisation was left with not only a new platform, but a stronger and more disciplined way of working.
